British aviator Beryl Markham is mobbed by reporters when she arrived at the Ritz Carlton Hotel on September 6, 1936. The plaster on her forehead covers cuts suffered when she crashed on the shore of Baleine Cove, Breton Island, Canada, due to a gasoline shortage caused by ice on the fuel tank. Her plane was badly damaged, but she escaped with a scratched face and a bruised body. She was trying to fly from Europe to New York. Although she did not reach New York, she became the first woman to fly the Atlantic east-west solo.

Petit Manan Lighthouse, Petit Manan Island, Steuben. Possibly my favorite lighthouse. In the summer, this island is home to hundreds of birds. Including Atlantic puffins, arctic, common and roseate terns, as well as black guillemots and many more. Decided I couldn't draw them all, but here's a couple attempts to try and capture the island's vibes. Can you spot the oystercatchers? MERCH

Puffin has been designated the official bird of Newfoundland and Labrador in 1992. The Atlantic puffin is one of three species of puffin and the only one that lives along the Atlantic Ocean. Atlantic puffins are seabirds and spend most of their lives at sea feasting on small fish, such as capelin, herring. Puffins  can dive to a depths of up to 60 metres (about 195 feet) to hunt for food and emerge victorious with up to 61 fish in its bill at a time.

Charles Lindbergh

The cockpit in which Charles Lindbergh sat while piloting the first aircraft to make a solo non-stop transatlantic flight, the Spirit of Saint Louis, in May of 1927 was as pioneering as the flight itself.

It was an unusual design to an ordinary layout of a cockpit of that era. A periscope was used instead of a forward window. The Spirit was designed and built in San Diego to compete for the $25,000 Orteig Prize, which was offered by New York hotel owner Raymond Orteig to the first aviator to cross the Atlantic non-stop, either from New York to Paris or vice versa. Lindbergh, a U.S. Air Mail pilot, believed that a single-engine, single-seat, high-wing monoplane would provide him with the best chance of success.

Under his close supervision, the Spirit was designed and constructed in just 60 days. To enhance the centre of gravity and minimise the risk of being crushed in case of a crash, Lindbergh had the large main and forward fuel tanks placed in the front section of the fuselage, ahead of the pilot, with the oil tank acting as a firewall. As a result of this design choice, there was no front windshield, and forward visibility was limited to the side windows.

However, this arrangement didn't bother Lindbergh, as he was accustomed to flying in the rear cockpit of mail planes with mail bags in the front. When he needed to see forward, he would simply look out the sides. To address the need for some forward vision, Lindbergh enlisted the help of a former submarine serviceman to design and install a periscope. Inside the cramped cockpit, measuring 94 cm wide, 81 cm long, and 130 cm high, Lindbergh couldn't even stretch his legs.

Over the years, one of Barbie's most common career paths was working for different airlines, as either a flight attendant or a pilot. Many of these were for either nonspecified or for Barbie-branded airlines. For example, that is true of Flight Time Barbie, the first time Barbie was herself a pilot.

However over the years Barbie has been affilitated with many real airlines.

For example, the first time Barbie worked as a flight attendant was as an American Airlines stewardess.

Subsequently, Barbie has also worked for Virgin Atlantic.

As well as JAL!

Now... technically speaking there was not an official Barbie released where she worked for the Australian airline Qantas. However, there is a large collection at a major Australian museum of Barbies and Kens throughout the years in replicas of different Qantas outfits. These were hand-made by former Qantas employee John Wilmott-Potts.

And this is extremely, extremely cool, frankly.

I don’t understand your joke about Turks and Romanians being cissy. What do they have to do with cis?

Transylvania -> Cisylvania Transcaucasia -> Ciscaucasia Trans just means across, and so there's tons of regions named after being... across a mountain range or other region. Like Transylvania, being across .. well this one is across the woods [I had assumed an area of the Carpathians was named Sylvania, although apparently that just means 'the woods' or something of that matter] ... meaning Cisylvania would just be. On the same side of the woods that whoever named it is from. Same with Transcaucasia being the name for countries on the other side of the Caucasus mountains, Ciscaucasia would be on the same side of the Caucasus as whoever named it. Although I had assumed it was the Romans that named it [meaning 'our side' would be in Turkiye/Anatolia] but apparently after a quick google search Ciscaucasia is actually the NORTH Caucasus, meaning it'd be the Russian side. The same with Italy. Transalpine is north of the Alpine mountains, Cisalpine is south of the Alpine mountains. For the South African bit, there was the province of Transvaal in South Africa which was... across the Vaal river. And so - Cisvaal would be south of the Vaal river. If I remember the post I said it on, it was someone saying that Cis is a slur... but like. That is just the word for 'on this side' in latin. And there are places... just. Named that. Because it's "on this side" of whatever power named the region. Hope this is mildly helpful 👍
